Today I'm unveiling the new Djunah album, Giallo, on Bandcamp and sharing its first single, “Rotting Age.”
What began as experimentation with analog synths and ’60s and ’70s Italian horror soundtracks blossomed into a totally wild and deeply impassioned noise-rock opera about complex trauma and the emotional fallout from witnessing violence as a child.
Giallo draws on the psychological world of Italian horror film: the heightened color and emotion, the mixing of beauty and brutality, desire and terror, and the unsettling feeling that no one can be trusted. Structured as a series of emotional movements, the album is a journey through rage, vengeance, intimacy, hopelessness, triumph, and terror toward reclamation of the fragmented self that shattered to survive.
As my first solo album, Giallo gave me the freedom to go wherever the music wanted to take me. I had no limits. From composing for a live horn section to programming my fantasy drums to playing a waterphone, I went wherever my heart led me. And — like any great giallo soundtrack — it led me everywhere.
Behind it all, I kept the core of Djunah’s sound — heavy guitars, crushing drums, and visceral, emotional vocals. The live horn section and analog synthesizers expanded my palette for blending vulnerability into apocalypse — mixing genres like lounge, big band, and torch singing into liturgical music, noise, and metal — and in the end somehow crash-landing in a wall-of-sound Tina Turner breakdown.
